Notes:
I was surprised to find out how much sugar is in lemonade. The standard ratio of lemon juice to sugar is 1 to 1, both in recipes and frozen concentrates. For an 8 oz. glass, this comes out to 6 tsp of sugar, the same ratio as in Coke! So, drink in moderation.
To reduce the sugar, alternative sweeteners could be used for half the sugar. Options are stevia or sucralose (Splenda). Stevia is a zero calorie sweetener derived from the leafy green foliage of the Stevia plant. Relatively new in the West, it was approved by the FDA in 2008. Japan has been using it for decades. It is a natural alternative to the often-controversial synthetic sweeteners (saccharin, aspartame, acesulfame-K, sucralose, cyclamate). It is now available in grocery stores. It will however, have a different taste. If your friends or family are not diabetic, they will probably prefer the sugar.
